CalendarAgent wants to use the "login" keychain

A student came to see me today with issues after having upgraded to Mavericks.  Ever since she updated to Mavericks she has been getting pop ups that are asking for keychain access passwords for all different access. Every time she enters a password it is rejected.  Hitting cancel makes the prompt come up immediately again.

CalendarAgent wants to use the "login" keychain

Messages Agent wants to use the "login" keychain

I was able to fix the problem by following the instructions below:

  1. Open Keychain Access, which is in the Utilities folder within the Applications folder.
  2. From the Keychain Access menu, choose Preferences.
  3. Click General, then click Reset My Default Keychain.
  4. Authenticate with your account login password.
  5. Quit Keychain Access.
  6. Restart your computer.

Flipped Learning Resources

It is the time of year when I begin thinking about student laptop models for next years incoming freshman.  Once I have selected the models I make a short video for parents guiding them through the ordering process.  It has really clarified the ordering process for parents so I continue to make the videos year after year.  I got my que from some of the flipped math lessons that are happening here in the Upper School.

When embarking on the Flipped Classroom research several years ago I attended a conference where I was introduced to Screencast-o-matic for video creation.  I have stuck with Screencast-o-matic as it fits all of my needs: it is easy to use, nothing to install, free, and I can post it immediately.  Other very popular choices are Jing and Camtasia.  If however you are looking to work off your iPad you could try: ShowMe, Educreations, Screenchomp, Ask 3, Explain Everything and Stage.

A common misconception about Flipped Learning is that it is really only for math classes, that is certainly the perspective I had initially.  If that is your mindset, but your are open to persuasion, you may be interested in this webinar "Read, Watch, Interact, Flipped Lit!"  For other resources on Flipping take a look at some of these sites: A collection of English Flipped classes, PBS Flipped Learning site, and FlippedLearning.org.

Setting up the LAME file for Audacity on your MacBook

Since Lingt language seems to have gone by the waist-side some of you are looking for a substitute.  I have not found anything comparable to Lingt and it is a real shame that they no longer offer support for their product, I thought it was brilliant.  So, in light of that I am recommending that you use Audacity as a substitute if you are needing to record your students pronunciations.  Audacity is installed on all the student laptops so that should not be an issue.  However, if you want students to save their files and send them to you in a more universal format such as MP3 rather than an Audacity file, audacity needs to be set up to access a file named LAME so that it can export the files as an MP3.  Although Audacity has a nice help page,  it didn't clarify for me just where I needed to put the file.

Take a look at these directions:

1. Choose which LAME file to download based on your OSX, http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=Lame_Installation

2. Scroll down to  section 3-1 Downloading and Installing

3. Click on the link and choose one of the options as listed below

4.  Choose to open the file, once it is downloaded run the package, select the Hard Drive icon and press the choose folder button

5.  Make sure to set it up in the Audacity folder

6.  Once you record your sound on Audacity choose to export the file.

7. When prompted navigate to the audacity folder where you have saved the file so it can be linked with your Audacity file.  Once you have linked the folder to the file you will be able to export any Audacity file as an MP3

Office 2008 can not display equations

Two students came to see me today asking for an Office update since they could not see their science equations in their Word document.  Of course, I can't upgrade their Office and I was concerned that an entire class would not be able to see the equations on their Word documents since they had an older version of Office.  It is well documented that Office 2008 does not support the display of equations.  In searching for a solution, I came across a great tool that I had never used and would encourage all Office users to take note of.  So, if you are using 2011 to create equations in your document you will likely need to save them as .doc files and then those with 2008 version can see the equations.  The picture of the image in 2008 is not perfect, but it seems to be an effective work around.  So, the next time you are saving a document use the compatibility tool and it will let you know exactly what in your document may not be compatible with particular versions of Office.  Once you take a look at the report you can choose what version to save your document as so that it is most compatible.
